A free, plain-language guide for one hard moment: someone you love has been arrested or jailed, and you need to find where they are and what to do next. Nothing more, nothing sold.
What this is
A state-by-state reference for finding a person in custody. Each page shows which system is likely holding them — county jail, state prison, or federal — and links you to the official locator for that state, plus what you’ll need and who to call.
How we research it
Every page is built from official government sources — state Department of Corrections locators, county sheriff jail rosters, the VINELink custody service, and the Federal Bureau of Prisons. We check that each locator link reaches a real, working official tool, and each page carries a “last verified” date.
What we don’t do
We are not a law firm and this is not legal advice. We never predict outcomes, never name or recommend an attorney, and — the most important part — we do not store, search, or republish any inmate records. Finding your person happens on the official source, not here.
Free and official only
Every tool we point to is free. We deliberately steer you away from paid “inmate search” and mugshot sites, which charge for public information and often show stale, incomplete, or expunged records.
Accuracy, and the limits we won’t hide
This is information families rely on at a frightening moment, so we would rather be careful than impressive. We describe general procedures only. Jails, prisons, and sheriffs each set their own local rules for rosters, visitation, and release, and those rules change — so every state page tells you to call and confirm before you rely on anything.
Custody information changes constantly, and someone booked in the last few hours may not appear online yet. Treat everything here as a starting point, and confirm what matters directly with the jail, the state department of corrections, or the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
Found something out of date or wrong? Because accuracy is the whole point, corrections take priority over everything else on the site.
