What inmate.solutions is — and isn’t
A free, plain-language guide for one hard moment: someone you love has been arrested or jailed, and you need to find where they are and what to do next. The custody guide is free. Michigan and Ohio pages separately identify paid commercial bail services; fees for those services are not fees for using this guide.
What this is
A state-by-state reference for finding a person in custody. Each page shows which system is likely holding them — county jail, state prison, or federal — and links you to the official locator for that state, plus what you’ll need and who to call.
How we research it
Every page is built from official government sources — state Department of Corrections locators, county sheriff jail rosters, the VINELink custody service, and the Federal Bureau of Prisons. We record whether locator content could be confirmed, including browser restrictions and unavailable links, and guidance research dates, locator-access checks, and facility-source dates are recorded separately. Historical facility records are not treated as confirmed current recommendations.
What we don’t do
We are not a law firm and this is not legal advice. We never predict outcomes, never name or recommend an attorney, and — the most important part — we do not store, search, or republish any inmate records. Finding your person happens on the official source, not here.
Free and official only
The official custody locators and public-safety notification services are free. Paid commercial bail services are separately labeled and are not government services. We deliberately steer you away from paid “inmate search” and mugshot sites, which charge for public information and often show stale, incomplete, or expunged records.

Coverage and resource review
Custody resources for all 50 states and DC were reviewed 2026-10-05. State guidance, county assistance and municipal holding or transfer arrangements are reviewed separately. A geographic page is not a promise that every local booking appears online.
Our 2026 Census inventory includes 3,144 current county equivalents and 48,213 places and active municipal entities. Exact geographic memberships support city and town lookup; they do not identify the arresting agency or jail. Connecticut’s current county equivalents are its nine planning regions.
2,896 county areas and 2,546 city or municipal entities currently have integrated custody-assistance reviews. The national county and municipal review remains incomplete; open areas are not counted as verified custody coverage. The table counts usable assistance with documented responsibility, including clearly labeled phone contacts. It does not count directories alone, unconfirmed searches, geographic matches or research awaiting integration.

We distinguish search forms reached, published phone assistance, agency directories, notification services and unconfirmed searches. We do not test individual custody results or guarantee that a phone contact will answer or disclose someone’s location. Services may omit agencies or have outages; check participation and use the responsible agency’s assistance path.
Butler Agency reviews resource access and service instructions at least every 30 days, and current facility contacts within 90 days. Correction reports enter a human review queue and are never published automatically.
Accuracy, and the limits we won’t hide
This is information families rely on at a frightening moment, so we would rather be careful than impressive. We describe general procedures only. Jails, prisons, and sheriffs each set their own local rules for rosters, visitation, and release, and those rules change — so every state page tells you to call and confirm before you rely on anything.
Custody information changes constantly, and someone booked in the last few hours may not appear online yet. Treat everything here as a starting point, and confirm what matters directly with the jail, the state department of corrections, or the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
Found something out of date or wrong? Because accuracy is the whole point, corrections take priority over everything else on the site.
